What Is Cabinet Refacing?

Posted On: October 22, 2019

For homeowners who are looking to breathe new life into their kitchens, cabinet refacing is a cost-effective option. When it comes to kitchen remodels, it’s often the cabinetry that is the main eyesore, making it the primary goal of the work. With less work and cost, refacing is worth considering as you make plans for your kitchen remodel. Here’s a closer look at what cabinet refacing entails.

The Cabinet Refacing Process

When you have your cabinets refaced, you’re basically having new fronts placed on them. The layout of the cabinets and drawers remains the same, but they get a fresh look with a veneer over the existing surface of the cabinets. Often the hardware and drawer pulls are also replaced to give a fresh, new look.

So how does this work? Here’s the step-by-step process:

  • Step 1 – Remove the cabinet doors and the drawer fronts.
  • Step 2 – Cover the cabinet boxes with a natural wood veneer or similar product that looks like the desired cabinet front.
  • Step 3 – Add a wood veneer or laminate skin to the cabinet sides.
  • Step 4 – Add new hinges if needed.
  • Step 5 – Add new doors and drawer fronts.
  • Step 6 – Add handles, drawer pulls, and other hardware or fixtures.

This process takes two to four days, depending on the kitchen’s size. It’s far less time consuming than completely gutting the kitchen and putting in new cabinetry. It also costs far less.

Should I Get Cabinet Refacing in My Kitchen?

In order for a cabinet refacing project to work, the kitchen needs quality cabinets. Sometimes, newer cabinets do not take the veneer well or may not be sturdy enough for the new doors. Older cabinetry is often sturdier and works well to accept veneers. Here are some indications that your cabinets are good candidates for refacing:

  • They are sturdy and are made of plywood or MDF that has a smooth surface for the veneers.
  • The face frames are made of solid hardwood.
  • The drawer hardware and internal storage elements are in good repair.
  • You like the kitchen layout as it is.

If your kitchen is a good candidate, you can save thousands with refacing the cabinets instead of replacing them.
